In house of hades; either the ending or in the middle.
I do not own any of Rick Riordan's books or characters, I am just a huge fan of the books!
Annabeth and Percy were so close to the doors of death. Covered in cuts, bruises, dirt, gold dust and with Percy half carrying Annabeth they looked in terrible condition. Sleeves and the sides of their trousers had been burned into ashes by the everlasting flames which surrounded them and they were both so relieved to be close to safety; although the thought of who should stay played on their minds endlessly. As they approached the doors of death they could see they’re friends sitting on the floor, none of them speaking, none of them looking directly at each other. They clearly thought Percy and Annabeth hadn’t made it.
Suddenly there was a huge thud as a monster three times the size of an average person jumped in front of Percy and Annabeth. It was like a human, but it had three eyes and skin that looked mouldy and gnarled. It had no toes and no fingers but its armed were like massive clubs, with dangerous spikes as large and sharp as knives.
Annabeth almost collapsed at the sight of this monster but she managed to hold herself together as Percy gently leant her on a rock. She had eaten ambrosia to make her ankle better but it was still in very painful and after so many fights it had just got worse. Percy was tired and scared but he took on the monster bravely. The monster took a swing at Percy with its arms but he clumsily dodged and took a slash with riptide at his feet. It made a clean cut in the foot but unfortunately it didn’t swipe it off. The monster roared in pain and was about to squash Percy under his foot but suddenly Nico, Leo, Piper, Hazel, Frank and Jason came in bellowing. As the monster froze in surprise Percy took this chance to run from underneath his foot.
With new found courage Annabeth managed to hobble to amongst the battle, and took out her dagger, ready to fight. The first person to act was Jason. As the monster tried to whack him Jason jumped up and grabbed hold of one of the spikes. The monster swung his hand up and Jason used the momentum to swing himself upwards onto the giants head. He was about to stick the knife deep into one of the monsters eyes when he felt a sharp and horrible pain in his leg. He realised the spike had gone straight through it and he collapsed, tumbling off the monsters head and smacking onto the ground. Piper screamed and ran to his side. She hurriedly dragged him through the doors of death and out of Tartarus.
He was luckily still breathing but Piper thought the impact of hitting the ground may have broken his spine. She fed him some Ambrosia, put her jacket under his head, and ran back to join the fight. Nico was lying unconscious by a rock and Annabeth was clinging desperately to the monsters foot, stabbing it repetitively as it tried to shake her off while Hazel was creeping round the back of it. Frank was helping Annabeth to distract the monster while Percy was feeding Nico Ambrosia. Leo was desperately trying to create fire.
Suddenly Annabeth let go of the monster and she was sent flying through the air into the flames. They invited her like grabbing hands, curling round her and pulling her in. Percy screamed and ran into the flames, trying desperately to find Annabeth.
Piper hadn’t noticed Hazel start to climb up the back of the monster, and it seemed like Frank was doing a good job of distracting it when suddenly Hazel realised she had no weapon, it was lying on the floor under a rock. Hazel waved to get Piper’s attention and when she did she pointed to her weapon. But it was too far away for Piper to reach in time and the monster had noticed Hazel was on its head – so Piper through her weapon up to Hazel and she caught it expertly. She quickly sliced it through the monsters eyes and stabbed it deep into the monsters head. There was a horribly loud moaning sound as the monster’s knees buckled and he collapsed to the ground. Hazel managed to keep hold of the monster somehow but as soon as the monster hid the ground Hazel tumbled off. She got up, rubbing her head, dazed.
Percy had managed to drag Annabeth out of the flames but she wasn’t looking too good. She was pale and smoking, and while feeding her nectar Percy was continually slapping Annabeth on the face in a desperate attempt to wake her up. Suddenly a ball of flame burst from Leo’s hand and hit the monster, disintegrating it.
‘That was a bit too late wasn’t it?’ Leo said.
Everyone ignored Leo and Piper started to speak.
‘Come on, let’s get to safety.’
Percy picked up Annabeth, and Frank dragged Nico to safety while the others followed behind. When they reached safety they noticed Jason was waking up.
‘What – happened?’ He mumbled. He tried to sit up but black spots danced above his head.
‘Monster.’ Frank said, as Piper rubbed Jason’s hand.
Nico groaned, rolled over and fell off a rock Frank had placed him on. He jumped up in shock. He groaned. ‘Ow.’
They all looked over to Annabeth who was still unconscious and was looking close to death.
‘Ambrosia and Nectar?’ Nico suggested.
‘Already given her as much as I can.’ Percy said, regretfully. He held her and tears fell from his face onto her smouldering clothes.
‘Water, water, who has water?’ Leo yelled suddenly. ‘It looks as if she’s still burning, it will be stopping her from breathing properly.’
Piper found almost a full bottle and Percy emptied it onto Annabeth. It made no difference. Hazel found another one and they tipped it onto her again. Annabeth was still unconscious but she was regaining her breath and she was no longer smoking; and Percy risked giving her one more half a square of ambrosia.
Just then Annabeth started coughing and opened her stormy grey eyes. She started to speak but found she couldn’t; she had no voice. She coughed a little more – but Percy was overjoyed and he hugged her mid cough. He held her face in his hands and kissed her, so relieved she was alive. Percy looked up to Leo and thanked him. When Annabeth could finally speak again they all sat in a circle – looking at each other.
‘Who’s going to – I mean, who’s going to close the doors of death?’ Piper asked.
‘It should be me.’ Nico claimed. ‘I’m Hades son after all, I have the most chance of getting out.’
‘No.’ Frank said. ‘It should be me. I’m not going to die in there if I’m not holding my piece of wood in my hands, am i?’
‘You can’t risk it Frank.’ Hazel said. ‘Prophecies can be deceiving and I’m not going to just let my boyfriend die. I’ll go, I’m not much use.’
‘Hazel!’ Piper exclaimed. ‘You were incredible there, you defeated that demon while barely getting hurt! You are too important to lose. Besides you have your horse and stuff. I should go. I’m only a child of Aphrodite. I don’t do anything.’
'Guys, don't be ridiculous. We'll all go around in turns offering to go, but none of us really want to and none of us will let someone else go willingly! Isn't there anything else? Leo, can you make an automaton?' Annabeth asked, desperately.
‘Nico explained that only a human can close the doors of death.’
‘Charmspeak can’t even help, Piper? Can you charmspeak a monster?’ Annabeth asked.
‘No, it only works on half-bloods or humans.’
‘There’s got to be some other way!’
Everyone all sat and thought for a minute, with their eyes closed, but they didn’t notice Piper stand up and walk into Tartarus. When the door began to creak shut they all opened their eyes and saw in shock, Jason leapt up, despite the dizziness and pain and ran to Piper. He pulled her back away from Tartarus even though Piper weakly tried to fight him away.
‘I’m not letting you go Pi-‘
Piper caught him as he fainted and lay him down. His eyes fluttered open.
‘I love you Jason Grace.’ She said, leant forward, and kissed him.
Everyone stared at her.
‘Come on, I’m not the strongest demigod, not the cleverest, and I don’t even think I’m the prettiest – and if I am what use is that? My charmspeak is only good for stealing cars. You guys need to save the world and beat Gaia. See you. I- I love you guys and tell –‘ her voice caught in her throat. ‘tell my dad I love him so, so much.’
As Piper backed away Jason managed to forge enough strength to grab Piper’s ankle.
‘Piper?’ he said.
‘Yes.’
‘I love you too.’
A single tear fell from Piper’s eyes and dripped off her face onto the floor. She laughed, but it was forced.
‘I better go before – before I start bawling.’
She turned and ran into Tartarus, closing the doors behind her. They slammed shut and dust exploded in a big cloud. Everyone stared at the doors, like they couldn’t believe what had just happened.
Jason curled up into a ball and started crying softly so Leo walked over to him and hugged him, their emotions spilling over.
Annabeth signalled to Percy to help her up. He did, and Annabeth leant against a rock, looking around in despair.
‘We have to win this battle.’
Everyone turned to look at Annabeth and she looked back defiantly.
‘Do I have to repeat that? We have to win this battle. Piper sacrificed herself to save us so we can fight. Let’s not let her death be in vain. We will honour her by winning. She is a hero – so let her be remembered. You got that?’
Everyone nodded.
And at the very moment that speech ended, Piper was killed in Tartarus.
